There is much confusion (to me, anyway) on how to keep a generator working to maintain the battery on my 8N. Lately, I have to keep one battery charging so I do a change out when the tractor battery runs down. I am set up with a POSITIVE GROUND connection, as this is what was recommended for my particular 49 8N: large positive battery post attached to the flat wire mesh cable connected to the chassis. Negative post is attached to the starter solenoid with a round copper cable.
Right now my tractor battery has a (EZ Red digital reading of 6.42 v). My fully charged alternate battery (just charged on my Die Hard charger) - at 100% also reads 6.42 v with my EZ Red hand unit. I am confident either battery will start my tractor tomorrow. But, I never know if the generator is charging the battery, because sometime my tractor dies while running for lack of a fully charged battery.
I have no way of checking the generator to see if it is working, due to the erratic electronics of an old tractor using digital reading equipment.
Do I need to polarize my generator at some point in order to eliminate this annoying change out? Do I need to take the tractor to a specialist to get it corrected? I know the polarizing process, but am unsure of when to do it. There should be a simple remedy for this, I am sure. Just don't know what it is.
