RE: FO-4
page 54, #79 Polarizing Generator, column two, reads ,"When a vibrating external regulator is used in the system, make a momentary connection between the "BAT" and "GEN" terminal of regulator".
have a graphic pictorial I got last year from JMOR.
It shows a type A & type B generator
The graphic shows for type A has three connections on a generic looking VR.
1. bat terminal with BAT written above it.
2. gen terminal with ARM written above, ARM probably is abbrv for armature
3. fld terminal with FLD written above, probably is abbrv for field
The graphic shows a jumper wire between bat & gen(armature) to polarize,
which is consistent with the manual from page 54, #79 heading.
I have in my possesion a VR that looks like the original that came off an 8N with the name Auto Lite
It has the identical outline as the VR shown in Figure FO71 & FO73 on pages 48 & 49.
There is no label on any of the terminals indicating "GEN" or "BAT".
However, figure FO73
shows wire #35 is labeled generator field to regulator.
shows wire #36 is labeled generator armature to regulator
shows wire #37 is labeled generator to terminal block,
The terminal block is connected to negative battery terminal
shows wire #26 ,which appears to be a ground wire from the VR mounting fastener
and the generator steel case.
It would make sense that "Gen" would mean the output terminal.
Page 52, Motors Smoothly, states " Polarize field poles by momentary contacting generator FIELD terminal with battery lead, to eliminate the possibility that field polarity was reverse during test".
This is the procedure for the NAA with B type external sourced field, not the 2N, 9N single wire A type with the internally sourced field or the 8N three wire A type also with internally sourced field.
There is an inconsistency in the manual in my opinion.
Which procedure is correct for the type A ,internally sourced field generator, I really don't know and have a problem accepting a procedure at face value without understanding the physics behind it.
