Since the 8N generator is an internally sourced field which means the generator make its own field current, the engine should run on only the generator.
If the + ground on the battery is removed the VR will sense no battery voltage and will close to charge the battery. The VR output Voltage will then be applied to the coil & points to run the engine.
The 2N, 9N engine should also run without the battery + grd connected using a cutout relay rather than the 8N VR, since the single terminal generator is also an internally sourced field.
However, do not believe the NAA with the externally sourced field type generator will run without a battery connected.
