Used my old Simpson analog VOM with needle.
bench tested polarization on two terminal 8N type A generator
1. jumped grd terminal to field terminal
2. connected + vom lead to armature terminal
3. connected - vom lead to grd terminal
4. set vom selector switch to 2.5 VDC, lowest setting
5. hand rotated front pully CW, quickly
6. got a SLIGHT backward deflection on VOM needle indicating negative voltage
at the armature terminal indicating generator is polarized, correctly.

Note: generator probably had not been polarized for really long time or maybe since first built.

repolarized generator
1. connected + 6 volt battery terminal to generator grd
2. momentarliy connected - 6 volt battery terminal to armature terminal

Retested generator for output, again, using identical procedure, as above.
VOILA, Got a GREATER backward deflection on the vom needle than on the first test
with the generator newly polarized.

We are now good to go!
