Using an generator and vibrating voltage regulator will result in shorter battery life compared to using an alternator, because the battery is constantly cycling between discharging and recharging when in use. The one terminal alternator will maintain a constant level charge on the battery result in longer battery life.

Six volt one terminal alternators are available. The alternator shop removes the 12 volt parts that are supplied new from the manufacturer and installs new parts
to convert the 12 volt alternator to a 6 volt alternator. The shop can also supply a bracket with the alternator that fits exactly as the generator with no hardware modifications required. The shop can supply the alternator setup for positive ground or negative ground.

The new style one terminal alternators with internal voltage regulator use transistors for the voltage regulator, while the older style uses diodes. The transistor type is sensitative to voltage spike if the battery ground is disconnected while the engine is runnning, while the diode type will survive removing the battery ground with the engine running.

The shop, I know, makes between 6 to 8 , six volt alternators / week and all are the diode type.

Using a six voltage alternator setup with positive ground requires no other modications to the tractor wiring and the original 6 volt coil and battery setup can used to maintain the vintage.

Have also seen 6 & 12 alternators that look like the generator to maintain the vintage appearance, but are about $400.

Ask the alternator shop today of the best way to test the generator by itself. The alternator shop said motoring the generator is the best method.
The altnator shop also said that the engine should keep running, if the battery ground is disconnected, when it is still running.
