Check quality of spark (should be able to jump a 3/16" gap on an old plug grounded to engine - should be a blue white spark - not yellow). If spark is weak - time for new points. Check for fuel flow thru the bottom of the carb by removing the pipe plug in the bottom of the carb. Catch gas in a clean container - let it flow for a couple of min - should have continuous flow.
Usually having to run with the choke is caused by weak spark, but it could be other things. Check for fuel and spark per above and if that doesn't lead you to a fix, post back.
