Perhaps, I'm not an expert on plating. Most of the pieces I have plated are for industry. The plater I use in Edmonton first buffs the part then copper plates it. Chrome is the final step but he tells me they don't use nickel anymore. Chrome stands up better and takes a better shine than nickel does.
