Hi Don, this sounds similar to what I've seen in the Hydraulic cylinders and sleeves I've had chromed, mind you it's industrial chroming. The bore is usually flawless chrome but there is always a residue of copper around the edges or backside of the part. This might be the gold-ish colour you see on the lamps. I believe the reason for the chrome not going all over has to do with the position of the electrodes and where they're attached. Your lights look fine to me as you did them and you're right, $75 will buy a lot of "chrome-in-a-can" . :)
