Again, here is what the back of one of my Dexta lights looked like before restoration:
Here is what the light looked like once cleaned and painted with a Rustoleum Metallic Finish:
Both the Hall and Butlers lights look to have the same material on them. My first thought was that it looked like mirror silver. But notice that goldish finish on the back of the reflector. What is that? I've never seen that on any mirror. Which is what led me to think of chrome. When I spoke with a local chrome shop and explained my situation, he indicated that chrome is what it used for headlamp applications. Had it not been for the price ($75), I would have gone with it.
Given how much I will be using these lights, I am happy with the metallic finish I used. They certainly seem bright enough:
Maybe Bob Johnston knows what the original stuff was - he's our resident chemist!
