Bruce:

We had two of the Navy versions at Naval Air Development Center in 1972. Everything we did there was special projects - some was black ops stuff like modifying Navy sono-buoys for the Army to drop along the Ho Chi Minh Trail to listen for footsteps, and some was real simple stuff like improved survival gear, life rafts, etc.. and testing of stuff like aircraft paint. Both of the birds had some sort of project gear in them and it was simpler to keep them flying than move the project to, say, a Navy C-130. They may gave been the last Gooney Birds in the Navy inventory.
