Our absolute best air support was from the prop driven A1E's, Skyraiders. (we called them Spads) They had a loiter time measured in days as opposed to the minute or two for the fast-movers. Besides, because they were so slow (again, compared to the fast-movers) they'd drop there stuff really, really close. You couldn't do that w/ a Thud or F-4. My guess is that's why they finally produced the Warthog.
BTW....those sensors.....they weren't dropped. They were planted. Real close to the "trail". It was actually a 2 lane hard packed all weather road in most places. And the sensors didn't work. Way to sensitive. After some time playing w/ those toys, it was back to us on the ground taking pictures.
