You can't leave this type attached all the time, for obvious reasons. However, you can replace it with a more modern swinging drawbar that you can leave attached most, if not all of the time. It looks like this:

Re: pulling roots - this can be one of the most dangerous things you can do on a lightweight tractor like an 8N, especially if you are inexperienced. If you hook up wrong, or hook up to something your tractor can't handle, you'll flip the N over on top of you faster than you can say "Oh sh!t!". If you aren't very experienced at this, please ask these guys for advice before attempting it.
