Try putting the nut back on the threads just enough to take the force of the hammer and not hit a thread. Otherwise take a pair of hammers and while holding one against a side of the meaty part of the joint rap the other side with the other hammer. Or use a "pickle fork" that you can pick up any nearly any auto parts store.
Also, try spraying the joint with PB Blaster. Stuff is good!
