I get mine rebuilt here in VA by the local NAPA machine shop. I take them the engine & pick it up primed & shrink wrapped. Cost has consistently been $1200 - $1400 depending on machine shop work.
This is a total rebuild. So, labor costs are about $600 - $800.
Last fall, I helped the neighbor pull the engine on his 50 8N & took it to the same shop; same price, but it needed a crank. $200 more for a good used one.
