Steve gave you good advice. John Smith's website will give the info that you need to figure out the build year even if the serial number is hard to read or obliterated.

Keep in mind that many of these tractors have "wrong year" parts on them. Dealers and repair shops wouldn't hesitate to scrounge boneyard parts to keep the farmer going. All of us here who have done a restoration or two have seen mixed up parts. I have seen wrong transmissions and engines in both 9N/2N's and 8N's, even military surplus BNO serial engines and no serial engines that were factory ordered replacements. The dealer was supposed to stamp on the serial on the replacement engine but some didn't.

The 2N was really just a 9N that included money saving (for Ford) production changes, like switching from a cast metal dashboard to a stamped steel one. The 2N and 9N are probably 95% parts interchangeable.
