2N with starters and magnetos

I have a 2N that I am currently trying to bring back to original. Went to a tractor show this past weekend featuring Ferguson and Ford. I saw about 3 2N's with mag and steel wheels pretty much original. What I was curious about was why they all had their starters still in the tractor??? I'm thinking it is to just bump the starter to turn it over???? Is this possible???? Can you do this without damage to the magneto??? Thanks
