Back in 1899, a Swedish inventor developed the NICD battery. He experimented with using iron in place of cadmium to save cost. It had a slower charge time and a greater out gas of hydrogen so he abandoned it. 2 years later Thomas Edison patented it and started a the Edison Battery company to make batteries for electric vehicles the company made NIFE batteries until 1972 and was sold to Exide which closed it in 1975. The batteries can survive many charge cycles and is rated a lifespan of 30 - 100 years. It is completely recyclable and has no environmental issues. When. I was a teenager, I saw the car that Edison owned at his winter home in Fort Myers, FL. The placard said that the battery still holds a charge.
