Merry olde English people were dropping by the score. It seems that they relied upon perfumes and oils to cover the odors of the body taking a bath every few months was the social norm. Daily or even weekly baths were for the heathens. Meanwhile the local Chinese workers took regular baths and their population did not suffer the same great losses of life such as the English.
