Computer question.

Lap top computer is an older Toshibo. Cable company sent me a 5G modem. Toshibo is 2.5 G at best. New computer and phone can find the new modem. Blink security and Toshiba can not locate / not listed, modem. Internet is working on the Toshiba via a cable.
Can I upgrade the Toshiba to 5G, so it can work with the new modem, that I did not order. New laptop is about $600-
