This will probably date me!

Sad story. An sailor was inspecting docks one time and couldn't see cause it was a foggy night. so he had a cane and was dragging it across the dock checking out the slits between the boards, ran out, and mistakingly walked off the pier. Proves when you're out of slits, you're out of pier!
