I was thinking of running a tap as a last resort but I did not want to bugger up the exist in case they were some odd thing. Turns out they were odd.
Also the base looks like cast iron or cast steel. It is also rather thin around the screws and I did not want to crack base or weaken the threads..
I found the correct old screws and they went right in. Now we can sew boat tops and seats..
