Machine screws

I need some machine screws help.
Fixing a 1968 Industrial Sears sewing machine and need 2 set screws that are missing.
A 1/4 28 thread screw will start into hole but binds up after a full turn.
I figured it may be a m6x1.0 metric but that does the exact same thing. It binds up after less then one turn.
Anyone have an idea what thread pitch it may be??
As a side note the m6x1.0 threads easily into a 1/4 x 28 nut. Seems to be same pitch as the 1/4x28 screw..
Any help is appreciated..
