Pistol permit

I have decided to finely get my pistol permit here in NY, I've done the 8 hour safety coarse, Next there's finger printing, back ground checks, interview with our county sheriff's office and a bunch more paper work and fees. There's a long waiting list, I won't be able to get my interview with the sheriffs department til Dec. 21st. and I'm fine with that.
My question to you fellow hand gun / pistol owners is what firearm would you recommend ? I'll leaning towards a small cal. pocket pistol, Not looking for some Dirty Harry 44 magnum, " Go ahead,Make my day" "Feel lucky punk? " LOL
