I used to go out rabbit hunting when I was in my teens and maybe a little after that. Back then the rabbits weren't a problem. It wasn't unusual to bag a couple of healthy ones to eat. But now.....not so sure about that. Nearly every rabbit I see has some kind of problem: sore places, etc. I haven't cleaned one in 50 years or so, so I can't give you much more than that. Maybe it's all in my mind, but the amount of different things to catch and get sick with has grown exponentially. Maybe it's just more knowledge and it's always been there. Either way, I don't think I'm all that keen on having wild rabbit now.
I would think a cottontail would be more palatable though. Jack rabbits tend to be lean and tough. There are plenty of both out running around.
