The best book I have read about WWII war production is "Freedom's Forge" by Arthur Herman.
It tells the whole story about Kaiser's shipyards, his drive and management. Throughout the book it tells the story of how "Big Bill" Knudsen orchestrated the re-purpose of American industry toward War Production. It was Knudsen, not FDR that coined the phrase "Arsenal of Democracy".
It tells the story of Willow Run and how Charles Sorensen and Ford engineers revolutionized mass production of complicated aircraft.
I have been studying WWII history for 50 years and this book about War Production is as captivating as anything I have read. It is very well written. I recommend it to all! It's a great read!
