The distributor only goes on one way. The key on the distributor shaft lines up with the slot on the cam shaft. Put distributor on without coil and cap on it. Turn shaft by hand until you feel it seat into the shaft. then you can bolt down the distributor body and reassemble. If you put it on without properly seating the key you will break the distributor housing and you will need a new one.
