I have personally never had anything come out the front of the mower and hit me (knock on wood) but have had things thrown out the back at pretty high speed -- rocks, chunks of wood, etc. The final straw was throwing out a small chunk of asphalt (there was once a driveway on the property) about 75' over a fence and it slammed into a metal storage building of a neighbor!!

So I made a set of chains for the back. They work really great. I used 2 pieces of angle I had laying around. The top one is 4x4 and the lower one is 1.5x1.5 (I think). I drilled holes about every 1 1/4" apart that the chain (1/4") would fit thru. I used 4 links for each chain. I cut the link with my cut off/grinder and bent them in the vice so I could 'unlink' them then put them thru the holes in the angle, straightened the link back out and welded the cut closed. I then welded the lower angle to the upper and bolted the upper angle to the back of the mower.
