If you are drawing water out of a tank, it has to go someplace. It will not compress. as long as you are spraying at a large enough volume you are fine, but if the pump is putting out more that the spray nozzle can handle, the excess has to be diverted back to the tank. Called a pressure relief or bypass valve.
