I worked in an automotive shop for awhile when I got out of high school and one of the guys 'adjusted' his regulator in that manner and that weekend went for a drive. This was back before sealed batteries. When his car quit running he opened the hood and took hold of a battery post to see if the clamp was loose, he lifted post, plates, and all out of the battery. Keep a watch on your amp gauge while running it, sounds like you may be alright since it goes back close to zero when the battery gets a charge.
