I would see if I could isolate it to a particular cylinder. Pull one plug wire at a time and see if there is a noticeable difference in how it sounds and runs. Might be a valve issue.
A couple other things I know can cause backfiring is moisture in the ignition, water in gas, plug wire on incorrectly.
