My method for priming is probably a bit unconventional but, I nose the tractor into a shallow ditch and just loosen the output side allen screw on the pump. I leave the engine run like that for a few minutes and then usually I will start to see fluid coming out around the threads of the plug. Armed with a few rags to catch the oil, I will watch it until I stop seeing air bubbles escaping along with the oil. Then I tighten the plug.
I kept having trouble with a leak at the pipe mounting flange under the pump, Apparently I have the wrong size O-rings and need to get that problem sorted. Anyway, I had a vane pump and the pipes to match so I switched the piston pump out for the vane pump. I was able to use the tractor last year but I want to switch it back so I'm on the hunt for the correct O-rings. Soon as I can come up with them, out goes the oil and I'll take the vane pump and pipes back off. I have rebuilt the piston pump and would much rather have it on the tractor than the vane style. I think the vane pump I have is a little worn and weak.
The new holland dealer here didn't have the correct O-rings. If you know of a place that knows what they are doing on the old parts where I can order them, I would sure like to get that info.
all the best,
Mike
