I've read where electronic meters can give hinky readings due to the "noisy" 6 volt generator. It really depends on how well the rev counter is shielded. For the advertised price of $42.00 it should be well made.
As you have already learned, the N's are geared taller than the most other tractors of that era. Your 9N is slightly lower than the latter 8N. They were geared primarily for plowing where the JD was more of a draft horse. The taller gears made the Sherman auxiliary transmission a very desirable option - Particularly the combo.
