My guess is that it was a reliability improvement for some military application, like a generator on a radio van. Remember that back in the day before modern electronics, communications gear was huge and not too reliable. Guys like Gen. Patton had to have a radio van follow them around.
Could have had a Navy application, too. Motor on a landing craft? What motor did the amphibious Jeeps use? They went too slow and sank in big waves which is why very few survived.
