Finally got around to checking the oil pump prime; put some 80w gear oil in there, but it made no difference. I unscrewed the tube from the back of the gauge, cranked the engine, and had no oil squirting out. Uh oh. I'm afraid I've been running it a little bit with no oil...but wouldn't that have locked up the engine? Either way, do I have an issue that @sjones mentioned, where the pump is disconnected, or is there something else I can check without dropping the oil and pan?
