Starter button

So after all the work to the 50 8n, painted and ready to start, the starter button was seized up. Ordered a new one and got the tractor running by just grounding the wire to the frame. New starter button finally showed up and I put it on today. Now, as soon as I attempt to attach the wire, the starter engages. Tried several times, same thing. Button moves freely, can depress in neutral, cannot in any gear. Is the issue with the button (faulty) or did I mess something up on the install? Anything I can try to remedy this?
