Tim, I've done quite a few 12V conversions on both front mount and side mounts and never have used a lamp. I always tried to use a 12V coil and if customer didn't want it I'd add the external 1-OHM ceramic resistor and never had any issues. Is the rest of your wiring correct? Did you remove the voltage regulator from the 12V circuit? You used to be able to go into town at your local Radio Snack outlet and get the diode but RS is no longer in business. Other electronic suppliers are around though.
