The cotter pin is there to rattle around and prevent the hole from plugging. You have a leaking transmission seal or rear main engine seal leak or both. If the oil doesn't drain out of the clutch housing it will build up in there and soak the clutch with oil. splitting the tractor is the only way to repair it.
