I had a complete Ferguson Weeder and also a Dearborn version including the retractable wings. I would use them to grate my gravel driveway and gather broken branches after wind storms. They worked great for those applications. Back in the days when there were no chemical herbicides, farmers had to weed with them, cultivators, or by human hands. Growing up in the early 1960's, the bean, corn, and beet farms around us all had hire migrant Mexican workers toiling all day in the fields. May have been chemicals by then but perhaps cheap human labor was not as expensive as chemicals and the equipment to spray with.
