My not knowing the wear in your shift system does not apply to my answer. Here is why.
The original 8N shift lever system was DESIGNED to be able to lift up the shift lever and rotate the lever 90 degrees.
WHY? Big boots. The lever can be lifted and swiveled in neutral or in gear and with the tractor running or parked. Even when going down the road or across the field working.
It is much easier to get big clunky boots across the transmission when getting on or getting off if the lever is out of the way. Also, if you were to stop in the field to get off and leave the tractor running, it is safer to swivel the lever out of the way.
