First off I agree with Carl. Polarization is not something you need. I have in my garage a generator from either a 1941 Mercury or a 1946 Ford. I swapped engines in 1953 and do not remember which engine donated the generator. The point is, it has not been mounted since that time. However I have on two occasions tested it by motorizing.
I am sure if I were to do that tonight it would still work.

My FO-4 does not contain the instructions on motorizing. However I did find this video which gives a good presentation of it. Apparently foreign as he speaks of the D terminal instead of the Armature terminal.

The discharging you are seeing is normal if the generator is not working. I would not worry about wiring or the battery at this stage.
