Accidents happen when we get tired, or in a hurry, and don't stop to engage brain. Case in point: We did some painting, just finishing up, and I was cleaning brushes. My wife went by carrying the 8 foot fiberglass ladder. Hmm, I didn't know she could lift it. That ladder is heavy! I should have asked what she was up to, but was tired, and focused on cleaning. The problem was, an 8 foot ladder isn't the right tool to reach something that is 14 feet off the ground. The next thing I heard was a small squeal and BANG as the ladder hit the ground. She was hanging by one arm from the deck railing. I took off running, but didn't get there before she got a grip with the other hand, slid down a bit, then let go, and landed on both feet. She was mostly OK, just some scrapes and a bruised rib. It could have been much worse. Thank the Lord we didn't end up spending several hours in the emergency room. Bad stuff happens, in the blink of an eye, to people who usually know better.
