Mark,
Is it the new day, my brain in a different gear, or more information? From this post, the answer is yes, you can cut it down safely as long as you have plenty of engagement between the two sections. I believe you are saying that EACH section (the male square shank and the female square receptacle) is 12 inches. Just remember to check the engagement through the range of motion the implement make when full down to full up. What is good on flat ground may not be good when going over hills or down through dips.
The other point to make is that driveshafts are very hard steel. I wouldn't want to try it without a reciprocating saw, several good blades and plenty of cutting oil. HTH
