One thing I would like to note about the shop safety list below. When using a pedestal grinder or a grinder equipped with a wire wheel, never use gloves to hold the part. If the grinding wheel or wire wheel catch the wheel it will pull your hand straight into it. These machines don't know the difference between the part you are grinding or wire wheeling and your hand, arm and whatever else gets sucked into them. Use a pair of vice grips to hold the part to keep your hands and fingers out of harms way. I know that most of you drive a desk during the day so your front feet may be a little on the tender side and gloves seem like the best thing to keep them soft and supple. Don't do it. Just clamp the part in a locking plier and let it take the abuse of a slip up. I learned the dangers of pedestal grinders by watching a guy in our shop go from being right handed to left handed because he wanted to protect his fingers from any slips that might happen. He slipped and the glove got caught and sucked into the wheel with his hand in it. He is fortunate that we are all up to date on first aid and CPR and that there were several of us nearby when it happened.
