I will once again refer you to the contemporaneous documents I mentioned. The South Carolina articles of secession make no mention of any issue other than slavery. It was the one and only issue for them. It is documented history. Read it.

The declaration stated the primary reasoning behind South Carolina's declaring of secession from the U.S., which was described as "increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the Institution of Slavery".[2]

The writing was on the wall - the country was rejecting the dispicable notion of institutional slavery and the southern states refused to accept it. So much so they fought a war to preserve it.
