I personally have no objections to these bases having the names of Confederate officers or politicians, although having had the subject brought up I wonder how it got that way. I like the names just fine, but it is a fact that these were individuals who took up arms against the United States of America-so how did they happen to gain so much currency with the namers of bases in the latter 19th and early 20th centuries? I don't know, certainly we have never named any bases for other noted enemies who fought against us, where is Fort Kesslring or Fort Rommel? I've never been to Fort Tojo.
I cannot think of any Naval bases or ships named for Confederate military, but perhaps there are.
Just a note: Pendleton is a Marine base and is a camp, not a fort.
