High speed rail is a really big pipe dream. The only ones who benifit are the rail companies and their lobbyists.
They had a big push here in Va a year or two ago where they were proposing a bypass of the town here and proposed running a new rail line right through my front yard and through a few historic farms that are my neighbors.
The town threw us country folks under the bus by recomending the bypass.
I went to a planning session and pointed out that they were all committing fraud because the were horribly underestimating the cost of the rail in order to show a good return benifit for the community.
One of the moderators said that I was out of order and was making false claims. I pulled out a planning study that was made a few years ago for the Main Street station renovation and showed them real cost estimates for upgrading rails and river crossings. Their study showed no budget for water crossings and underested the cost of new rails by a factor of 10. The real cost would be 10 times what they were quoting.
Shortly after that meeting the whole subject was deferred to a later date. Code for we need to go silent and slide this through when no one is looking.
