Up here it is the increased tanker traffic that is causing the most protest. Would add about one ship per day in Georgia Straight, Boundary Passage, Haro Straight and Juan DeFuca Straight. The Orca numbers are supposedly going down. The ships get the blame, but there is no proof. The other objection is the type of bitumen oil being shipped. Having a refinery in AB would fix that problem. Another solution would be a pipeline from AB to a port just East of the top of Vancouver Island. With a refinery near the port. But that got shot down.
Half the AB oil that arrives to the BC coast, goes to a refinery in WA, and we in turn bring about thirty percent of it back to BC. We are all hypocrites.
