Indeed there is still much slavery practiced today. Indian tribes on the West Coast of BC would have raiding parties against other tribes, to obtain slaves. Many Indian women are against self government for some tribes, for that reason. A white British sailor was held as a slave for two years. His account of life with the tribe provides good history.
As an aside. When visiting another tribe by boat, you enter to port, as a sign you come in peace. To starboard for war. Same rule in Hawaii as Captain Cook found out.
We went around the boat island anti clockwise, which allowed us to enter all the ports and bays to port.
We visited Friendly Cove, where the British and Spanish met with the local chiefs. The result of which: The Spanish left town.
