I have a cheap Chinese 1000 watt 2 stroke. $150. Also a 2000 watt Yamaha four stroke. About $1,400. The Yamaha will run the fridge, computer, some lights and the coffee maker. For heat I run a propane unit that uses a 12 volt fan.
Other issue on my Island when the power goes off, it water. I use water tanks and a 12 volt pump. Well pump needs 240 volts. So some folks wyre in the bigger units that you are referring to. That way they can run the house power, and the water pump. I always thought an old Gardner diesel, running a generator would be cool.
The big units are noisy, usually running at 3,600 revs. My Yamaha has a magic button, that makes the unit go to silent running, when the load reduces.
When I build the new cottage, I will run most systems on 12 volts, and use solar panels. Similar propane furnace, and a diesel unit. Stove is also propane.
A wood fireplace can be used to boil water, and heat the pizza.
