Thanks for the reply. Yes, I pulled the head and when it would not pull out, I put a vice grips on the rod and tapped the grips with a small sledge. No noticable movement. I didn't want to put too much pressure on it and break something down below. There is a cement floor in the barn, so there is no way to get to the lower end. As I said, the faucet works fine and the rod moves up and down as it should with the handle. I have rebuilt this hydrant before and the rod came right out with normal effort.
